It is often common in business where steel oil tanks are required, these including the storage of fuel and other things. There are some laws however, that govern the standards in which these oil tanks should adhere to. This is due to the environmental concerns regarding oil, and what would happen to the environment should a spill occur.

The recent event last year in the Gulf of Mexico, is certainly a testament to this environmental concern. When discussing steel oil tanks, the environmental risk is much smaller, though damage can still occur, engaging that there must be some sort of legislation to guard against this.

There are also special circumstances in which additional protection may be needed when people are looking to use steel oil tanks. These include instances where:

-          The oil tank is installed within 50m of a well borehole or spring

-          The tank has been placed somewhere near a controlled water supply, which may include but is not limited to an open drain, a man hole cover or a lake.

-          The tank has been installed in such a way that the vent cannot be seen from the fill point.

-          The tank is installed with a capacity which is more than 2500 liters, or in such cases where the tank is installed in places where a spillage could leak into rivers.

These are certain circumstances in which there is a substantial risk to the environment. One of the ways in which damage to the environment can be prevented is by simply using a bunded oil tank. Such a tank has two skins, which means that if something were to happen to the outer skin of the tank, there is still the inner skin to contain the oil until the other problem can be fixed.
